چکیده

Context. Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are common absorption features in spectroscopic observations but their origins remain unclear. DIBs play an important role the life cycle of medium (ISM) and can also be used to trace Galactic structure. Aims. Here, we demonstrate capacity Gaia -Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) DR3 reveal spatial distribution unknown molecular species responsible for most prominent DIB at 862 nm RVS passband, exploring ISM within a few kiloparsecs from Sun. Methods. The measured GSP-Spec module using Gaussian profile fit cool stars process hot stars. In addition equivalent widths uncertainties, provides characteristic central wavelength, width, quality flags. Results. We present extensive sample 476 117 individual measurements obtained homogeneous way covering entire sky. compare distributions carrier with reddening find evidence that carriers local bubble around Sun which contains nearly no dust. characterised width density 0.19 ± 0.04 Å kpc −1 scale height 98.60 −8.46 +11.10 pc. latter is smaller than dust height, indicating more concentrated towards plane. determine rest-frame wavelength unprecedented precision ( λ 0 = 8620.86 0.019 air) remarkable correspondence between velocities CO gas velocities, suggesting related macro-molecules. Conclusions. unique structure DIB.

The Diffuse Interstellar Band at 8620 Å: a Good Reddening Tracer for Gaia

We report about a suprisingly good correlation between the equivalent width of the diffuse interstellar band (DIB) at 8620 Å and the interstellar reddening. Such a correlation offers bright prospects in using the 8620 Å DIB as a tracer of the extinction through the Galaxy in the context of the GAIA mission by ESA. The GAIA mission planned by ESA is aimed to provide astrometry in the 10 microarc...

Theoretical Prediction of a 443 Nm Transition: a Potential Carrier of a Diffuse Interstellar Band

The carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) is one of the longest standing problems in astronomical spectroscopy. This completely unattributed absorption spectrum stretches from the UV to near-IR and can be seen in multiple interstellar sightlines with the strongest features at 443 nm and 578 nm. Additionally, the number of known features grows with every observation. No known molecul...

Rejection of the C Diffuse Interstellar Band Hypothesis

Using the new high-resolution (∼8 km s ) echelle spectrograph on the 3.5 m telescope at the Apache Point Observatory, we have begun a high-sensitivity survey of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in a large sample of reddened stars. Now that we are 2 years into this long-term survey, our sample includes over 20 reddened stars that show at least one of the DIBs that had been suggested to be c...

Diffuse Interstellar Band at 5850 as a Member of 5797 Spectroscopic Family

The carriers of diffuse interstellar bands are still mysterious species. There exist many arguments that diffuse bands at 5797 and 5850 angstroms have the same carrier. Using high-resolution spectra of few dozens of reddened stars we have searched mutual correlation between intensities of considered bands. Results of our analysis indicate that 5797 and 5850 really tend to have the same carrier.

Detection of H 3 1 in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

The molecular ion H3 1 is considered the cornerstone of interstellar chemistry because it initiates the reactions responsible for the production of many larger molecules. Recently discovered in dense molecular clouds, H3 1 has now been observed in the diffuse interstellar medium toward Cygnus OB2 No. 12. Analysis of H3 1 chemistry suggests that the high H3 1 column density (3.8 3 10 per square ...
